Kobayat, a village of about twelve thousand inhabitants, is the largest Christian village in the mountainous region of Akkar. Thanks to its agriculture, it was long considered a guarantor of the economic stability. During the civil war, many fires have led to deforestation.

Today, it is a victim of the emigration of Christian families and struggles to maintain its historical and spiritual identity. For this reason, the Lebanese association Al-Nawraj called on SOS Chrétiens d'Orient to help them to expand the Christian school of Kobayat.

Elias, project manager of the work site.

More and more Christians have a tendency to leave Lebanon. In Kobayat, we are doing our best to encourage them to stay despite the many departures. This school, owned by the municipality of Kobayat, allows children to attend school at a lower cost. The majority of the costs are covered by the city hall. The expansion of the school would allow more Christian children attend school in an healthy and spiritual environment.

The inhabitants of Kobayat are all too familiar with the consequences of a declining economy and the exodus of Christian populations. In the field of education, nothing is done because of lack of resources. The limited capacity of the village school prevents many children from attending school. However, the municipality has already committed itself to funding, in large part, the children’s school fees if three additional classrooms are built. The rest of the cost would be borne by families.

Elias, the project manager of the construction site, told the association through the voice of her daughter Ylyge, a one-day translator, that the school is waiting for a hundred children, including her daughter, to attend school.

SOS Chrétiens d’Orient joins the municipality's desire to promote access to education for as many people as possible.
