The Maronite Patriarch, His Beatitude Bechara Boutros Raï speaks about the disaster from the summer seat of the Patriarchate in Dimane. In a letter dated of the 5th of August, he calls for help from the "States of the World" and thanks the nations that stand by Lebanon's bedside. He recalls in his letter the importance of saving Lebanon, for peace in the East and in the world. SOS Chrétiens d’Orient rellays his call.

AJ Beyrouth

"Appeal to the States of the World

Beirut is a devastated city. A disaster struck there because of the mysterious explosion that occurred in its port. Beirut, the bride of the East, Beirut, the lighthouse of the West, is wounded. Destruction and desolation in all its streets, neighborhoods, and homes. Dozens of citizens have lost their lives; thousands are injured; hospitals, churches, houses, institutions, hotels, shops, and various public and private establishments are destroyed. Hundreds of families are homeless. All this is happening, and the State is in an economic and financial bankruptcy which makes it unable to face this human and urban catastrophe; and the Lebanese people are also in a state of poverty and destitution.

The Church, which has set up a relief network throughout Lebanese territory, today finds itself faced with a new great duty which it is unable to assume on its own. While being totally in solidarity with the afflicted, the families of the victims, the wounded and the displaced that it is ready to welcome in its buildings.

On behalf of the Church in Lebanon, I thank all the States which have expressed their availability to help Beirut, a devastated city, and I address myself to the brotherly and friendly countries, to the great States, as well as to the United Nations, for to mobilize, to provide immediate help to save the city of Beirut, without any political consideration, because what happened is beyond politics and conflicts. I also call on charities in different countries to help Lebanese families, and Beirut in particular, so that they can heal their wounds and restore their homes.

During the last few years, Lebanon has not ceased to experience successive political, security, economic and financial catastrophes which require interventions to save it. Lebanon, which offered the alphabet to the world, deserves the support of its brothers and friends to help restore its capital, through the immediate creation of an "UN-controlled fund" to manage help. I am speaking to you because I know that you love Lebanon and that you will respond to this call. I am speaking to you because I know how much you want Lebanon to regain its historic role in the service of mankind, democracy, and peace in the Middle East and the world.
