Renovating an abandoned gym

Context

Hartashen is one of the poorest villages in the Goris community, located on the hills a few kilometres from the new border with Azerbaijan. The war is raging on their doorstep, the villagers have had some of their grazing land and part of their income from the wheat harvest stolen, away this year, because of the proximity of enemy soldiers.

The children in this small village, which has been deeply damaged by the war, have been studying in a beat-up school for a long time. The cold winter days and the hot summer ones make education difficult. Similarly, the gym, which has been neglected, is in a dilapidated state and is used more for storing useless old trinkets than for sport. Physical activity would give the students a healthy means for their energy, helping them to rediscover a balanced life and forget for a while about the war on the village’s doorstep.
