On September 23, 2024, the Israeli army began an intense period of bombing in South Lebanon, south Beirut and the Bekaa region. The bombing continued without a break for months. Hospitals were hit and medical infrastructure was destroyed. This disrupted emergency services. Rescuers and civilians were themselves injured and killed.
According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, by the end of September, 97 medical and emergency staff had been killed and dozens of medical centers damaged. The hospitals still standing are completely overwhelmed by the number of victims, and routine care is no longer available.
The toll is catastrophic. On Thursday, October 10, the Ministry of Health stated that since the first attack on September 23, the total number of dead had reached 2,141, with 10,099 wounded. To date, 1,000 shelters have been opened for displaced people, 807 of which have reached full capacity. 185,400 displaced people have been registered in the listed shelters.
To meet urgent medical needs, SOS Chrétiens d’Orient, in partnership with the Ministry of Social Affairs (MOSA), set up a mobile medical unit. It operated from December 2024 to April 2025 in the Jezzine district in the south, to meet the health needs of displaced people in Lebanon.
The project aimed to provide primary and specialized health care, especially general health, pediatrics and gynecology, in isolated areas badly affected by the crisis.
Its goals were to offer fair access to health care in remote areas, to meet the specific needs of women, children and older people, to ensure continuity of care despite displacement and instability, and to strengthen the health resilience of local communities.
This vital project was made possible by your donations. Thanks to you, families have regained their health in remote areas of Lebanon. But the social and medical crisis goes on. For hope to survive, we must act again. Every donation counts. They need you. Today, not tomorrow.
In November 2023, SOS Chrétiens d’Orient came directly to our village, close to the Israeli border. I am so moved to see that a year later you are still with us. On behalf of my whole parish, may you be blessed, and please pray for us.
