Since the Nineveh Plain has been liberated, some Christians have made the brave return to their land of origin, though almost all of them lost their jobs. Since January 2017, in Ankawa, the capital of the Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq where SOS Chrétiens d’Orient have a mission, the St. Joseph vocational Training Centre welcomes thirty-one displaced Christians from the villages of the Nineveh Plain.

SOS Chrétiens d’ Orient offer free four-month training courses in the reconstruction trades: carpentry, stone masonry, glazing and tiling, plumbing and electrician training.

André, student of the centre

We are training men in these different jobs which match labour needs for the reconstruction of the houses of Christian villages in the Nineveh Plains.

The aim of this project, which is carried out by volunteers, is to train these young people in time for the liberation and security of Christian villages, so that they are ready to work when families return back to their homes. The trainers at the St Joseph Centre are all displaced Christians themselves from the Nineveh Plain. They offer teir time and their skills to the youth of their villages as they wish to transmit their knowledge to a new generation.

Today, all together, they have the heart to become the principal builders in the reconstruction of their homes most of which were destroyed or burned by Islamic terrorists when they took control of the Christian villages in 2014.

Thanks to your support, thirty-one young people will return to the plain of Nineveh, the historic cradle of Christianity in Iraq. In 2018, the association decided to move the St Joseph Training Centre, right back to the heart of one of the biggest Christian towns in the Ninevah Plains, so that the young trainees are close to the places they will reconstruct.

In a few weeks, Karemles should welcome the centre in the heart of the city.
