On the slopes of the Gara mountain, in the Sapna valley, Sersink is one of the highest villages in Iraq. Its population was historically composed of Kurds and Assyrians, but today, out fear of  ISIS terrorists and / or a lack of work, the Christian population is the victim of a massive rural exodus, as people flee mostly to the main cities of Kurdistan or leave their homeland altogether, and emigrate to western countries.

Mokhtar of Sersink

Thanks to the involvement of SOS Chrétien’s d’Orient in this project, we can now ensure that the Assyrian families of Sersink have a continuous and consistent supply of water, thus allowing sustainable irrigation of their plots. This is a considerable aid for which we will never be able to thank them enough.

In order to prevent the last Christian families, who now number about a hundred, from leaving Sersink, SOS Chrétiens d’Orient has committed itself to the restoration of the village irrigation network, which is at present, obsolete and permeable. We begin this essential work to allow the maintenance of the various orchards and agricultural plots. In doing so, we can support families to continue living on their lands so that they can continue to work and support their basic needs or obtain additional income through the fruits of their crops. This restoration will, among other things, significantly increase the volume of water transported to the Christian areas and facilitate the maintenance of the various channels and pipes

The project in figures:

- 15 days of work in collaboration with a dozen villagers

- 250 metres of pipes purchased and installed by volunteers

- 1 water retention basin rebuilt

- 40 families with access to the irrigation system

- $1600 in total budget
