OPERATION RENAISSANCE OF NINEVEH

In August 2014, the Nineveh plain fell into the hands of the Islamic state causing a massive exodus of Christians to Iraqi Kurdistan. SOS Chrétiens d’Orient is present with 120,000 Christians displaced in this region since July 2014.

In 2017, Iraqi and Kurdish forces supported by the international coalition liberated the villages in the Nineveh plains. Many houses, shops and lands are completely destroyed or ravaged by the violence of the Islamic State.

Bishop Ortega Martín, Apostolic Nonce in Jordan and Iraq

I am grateful for the opportunity, which is given to me, to send a word of encouragement to the Christians in Mosul and the plain of Nineveh who after having lost everything, have clung to their faith, have witnessed for Lord Jesus Christ and didn't deny Him. To them, I tell : the testimony of your faith is a treasure for the whole church. As Pope Francis said, I encourage all Christians not to shirk their hope and to remain attached to Jesus Christ, who is their strength.

For those of you who have been displaced for a long time, often in precarious conditions, I wish you a quick return to your towns and villages. You know that your presence in the plain of Nineveh is crucial. You are the presence of Christ. You have a great mission that no one can accomplish in your place. I encourage you to stay in your country and continue to contribute to the good of society. With you, I pray for peace and reconciliation in your country.

Six months after the liberation of their city, eleven families decided to take the road back and to resettle even if access to drinking water and electricity is not restored yet. The other families wait for the end of the 2017 school year to come back with their children. Many of them share their expectations: if non-governmental organizations start reconstruction work many will see a sign that it is time to return.

Following these requests, SOS Chrétiens d’Orient joined the Ninevah plain reconstruction committee and contributed to the rebuilding of houses, civil and religious buildings. The aim is to preserve the Christian community’s anchor and help Iraqis to rebuild their own land.

In 2017, the association rebuilt fifty houses in the Nineveh plain (Bartella, Karemlesh and Qaraqosh). The goal is to rebuild sixty-five houses in the east of the Nineveh plain: thirty-five in Qaraqosh, ten in Karemles and twenty in Bartella.

In Qaraqosh, the reconstruction of a house costs between $853 and $2892 according to the level of destruction of the house. The reconstruction of the thirty-five houses amounts to $70,100.

In Bartella, the reconstruction of a house costs between $1993 and $3282. To rebuild twenty houses, we need $60,577.

SOS Chrétiens d’Orient has committed itself to rebuild sixty-five houses which will cost a total of $130 669.
