Six months after the liberation of their city, eleven families decided to take the road back and to resettle even if access to drinking water and electricity is not restored yet. The other families wait for the end of the 2017 school year to come back with their children. Many of them share their expectations: if non-governmental organizations start reconstruction work many will see a sign that it is time to return.
Following these requests, SOS Chrétiens d’Orient joined the Ninevah plain reconstruction committee and contributed to the rebuilding of houses, civil and religious buildings. The aim is to preserve the Christian community’s anchor and help Iraqis to rebuild their own land.
In 2017, the association rebuilt fifty houses in the Nineveh plain (Bartella, Karemlesh and Qaraqosh). The goal is to rebuild sixty-five houses in the east of the Nineveh plain: thirty-five in Qaraqosh, ten in Karemles and twenty in Bartella.
In Qaraqosh, the reconstruction of a house costs between $853 and $2892 according to the level of destruction of the house. The reconstruction of the thirty-five houses amounts to $70,100.
In Bartella, the reconstruction of a house costs between $1993 and $3282. To rebuild twenty houses, we need $60,577.
SOS Chrétiens d’Orient has committed itself to rebuild sixty-five houses which will cost a total of $130 669.
